Dentures & Partials

Your teeth play many critical roles in your mouth. Suffering tooth loss significantly impacts all of these roles. When you lose your teeth, eating becomes more challenging, causing your digestion and nutrition to suffer. It becomes harder to speak properly. Your smile deteriorates, and you become self-conscious. Missing teeth need to be replaced. OHIOSmiles can replace your missing teeth with dentures and partials.

Causes of Tooth Loss

The number one cause of tooth loss is gum or periodontal disease. When plaque and bacteria irritate your gums, they cause inflammation. Without treatment, the inflamed tissue starts to pull away from the teeth, creating a place for bacteria to hide. Once below the gumline, the bacteria begin to attack the periodontal ligaments and the jawbone, which causes them to become weak. Over time, your teeth become loose and fall out.

There are a few other causes of tooth loss as well.
•  Facial trauma, such as a slip and fall, a sports injury, or a car accident.
•  Severe tooth decay. In cases like these, the teeth do not have enough structure for a filling nor do they have the strength to support a crown. This leads to the need for an extraction.
•  Bruxism, or the grinding and clenching of your teeth.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are the traditional treatment for tooth loss. The most well-known dentures are full dentures or those that replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Dentures are a removable prosthesis that consists of false teeth set into a base. Modern dentures often use acrylic resin teeth and a gum colored acrylic base. Advancements in dental technology have greatly improved the quality of traditional dentures, reducing their bulk while making them look much more natural. The base is designed to rest solely on your gums, which provide your restoration with the support it needs to function.

Your dentures are created from impressions of your mouth. These impressions are taken after any necessary tooth extractions take place. After the impressions have been taken, they are sent off to our dental lab, where the restoration is designed and then brought to life. Before you leave with your new dentures, we check to make sure that they fit properly, that your bite is good, and that they are comfortable. If no adjustments are needed, you can leave the office with a beautiful, healthy new smile.

Replacing Sections With Partials

If you are missing a section of teeth, but all of the rest of the teeth in the arch is completely healthy, you may be recommended for a partial denture. Similar in design to a full denture, partial dentures allow for your healthy teeth to remain in their positions, avoiding the need for unnecessary extractions. Partial dentures are similar in design and similar in the way that they are created. However, along with only replacing a section of teeth, partial dentures do have one other difference. These dentures have clasps that attach to your healthy teeth for additional support.

Benefits of Dentures and Partials

Dentures and partials provide several benefits.
•  They restore your abilities to eat and speak properly.
•  Your digestion and nutrition are improved.
•  Your smile and confidence are restored.
•  Partial dentures help to hold your healthy teeth in proper alignment, preventing shifting.

No matter if you are missing sections of teeth or an entire arch, replacing your teeth right away is crucial for restoring their functions and giving you back your quality of life. Call OHIOSmiles today at (740) 630-9797 to schedule your consultation.
