Give Kids A Smile Day to Provide Free Dental Care for Children in Cambridge, Ohio

Dr. Denise Antalis and her staff will be sponsoring their annual Give Kids A Smile® event on August 4th at OHIOSmiles in Cambridge, Ohio.  Kids under the age of 18 will receive a free dental cleaning and exam.

Nearly one in four children aged two to 11 years old has untreated cavities in their baby teeth, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many children enrolled in Medicaid receive no dental services throughout the year.

Give Kids A Smile is held annually to:

  • Provide free, easily accessible dental services to qualifying individuals.
  • Raise awareness of the epidemic of untreated dental disease occurring locally and nationally and create local public and private partnerships to increase access to oral health care to solve this crisis.

This will be the 3rd year that OHIOSmiles has been hosting the annual Give Kids A Smile event as a way to provide free dental care to local children who desperately need it.

The American Dental Association (ADA) launched the Give Kids A Smile program nationally in 2003 as a way for dentists to join with others in the community to provide dental services to underserved children. Each year, about 350,000 to 400,000 children benefit from more than 1,500 events, all because of the efforts of 40,000 or more annual volunteers nationwide.

The high volume of patients participating in charitable events like Give Kids A Smile highlights a clear gap between those with and without good dental insurance. Considering that oral health is connected to total health, financial barriers to good dental health should be of major concern to the leaders of our state.

“Give Kids A Smile has two purposes – helping children get the dental care they so desperately need and raising awareness that our children deserve a health care system that addresses their dental health,” said ODA President Dr. Chris Connell. “Oral health is essential to good overall health.  And we know that dental disease is linked to other systemic health issues, which is why it is critical that children have positive experiences with seeing a dentist early in life.  And that is part of what Give Kids A Smile is all about: ensuring children and their parents understand the importance of good oral health and seeing a dentist twice a year.”

This year’s event will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2016 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at OHIOSmiles located at 1500 Deerpath Dr. in Cambridge, Ohio.
